Brief BiographyRick Lawrence received his B.S. degree from Stanford University in Chemical Engineering and his Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois in Nuclear Engineering. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, and Phi Kappa Phi honorary societies. His Ph.D. thesis focused on computational methods for solving the neutron diffusion equation, and his initial research at Argonne National Laboratory and Schlumberger-Doll Research was in the development of numerical algorithms and models for solving radiation transport problems. Rick joined IBM Research in 1990 in the Parallel Systems group, where he focused on the development and performance comparison of various scientific algorithms on SIMD and MIMD parallel architectures. He subsequently managed the Parallel Applications Group, and received an IBM Outstanding Technical achievement award for his work in the development of the parallel communication library for the SPx series of parallel computers. He has received an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award for his work in scalable data mining. Most recently, he managed the E-Market and Supply Chain Analytics Group within the e-Commerce Department at IBM Research. Rick joined the Data Analytics Research Group in Math Sciences in 2001. His recent work has focused on a range of predictive-modeling applications including optimal bid pricing (with the IBM Personal Computing Division), passenger-based prediction of airline no-show rates (with Air Canada), and company-based propensity modeling using both structured and unstructured data sources (with IBM Global Services). |
