Computer-Supported Cooperative Work

  About Us

The field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) focuses on how groups of people interact using technology. CSCW is an interdisciplinary field and involves computer scientists, social scientists, and designers. The people working in this research area seek both to understand the role of technology in group systems and to develop new offerings that support it more effectively. CSCW plays an increasingly significant role with the advent of IBM's Web and eBusiness applications, and is particularly important to IBM's Lotus-branded collaboration offerings such as Domino, Notes, and LearningSpace. CSCW projects can be found in IBM Research labs around the world. These projects range from ethnographic studies in diverse work settings to technological experiments for delivering awareness and presence across time and space to total cost of ownership studies of communities.
