BlueTooth

We actively participate and represent IBM in a number of taskforces in the AIR, Software, and Interoperabillity technical working groups of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. Bluetooth is a short range wireless connectivity technology with special focus on a specification that lends itself to a low cost, low power and integrated implementation.
We envisage short range wireless technologies such as Bluetooth to revolutionize mobile and pervasive computing paradigms. Considering a wide range of computing and communication devices such as PDAs, notebook computers, pagers, cellular and cordless phones with different capabilities, a "smart" short range wireless connectivity solution can be a major enabler for new, and exciting research areas. We have an ongoing project to understand the applicability of short range wireless connectivity in proximity networking, hidden computing, collaborative services, smart spaces, etc.. Our goal is to understand challenges of such research areas and their inter-play with smart short range and integrated wireless technologies. IBM Research has been a major contributor to both Infrared- and radio-based standards and had developed a number of technologies in this area.
