What does it do?
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a next-generation messaging protocol that allows mobile device users to incorporate audio, images and other rich content into traditional text messages. MMS offers exciting functionality and full multimedia content to subscribers and an array of business opportunities to operators and service providers.

What’s New?
IBM China Research Laboratory has committed itself to researching interactive MMS platforms, providing an interactive MMS platform and SDK (Software Development Kit) to help Internet service providers develop various MMS services and helping customers extend their internal applications to support MMS mobile phones, which will improve productivity for their companies.

Customer Usability
MMS will make a significant impact on our personal and working lives. The mobile community has great hopes that MMS will prove to be the next important development and play a key role in halting the decline in ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). Mobile network operators are keen to introduce MMS as the flagship service on 2.5 or 3rd generation networks. Research analysts forecast that by the end of 2007 all new handsets sold in Western Europe will be equipped for MMS.

The target users of the platform are device manufacturers, MMS service providers and enterprises. The applications include:

  • Enterprise Solutions: Support mobile employees in an enterprise on order to improve productivity.
  • MMS client on Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). We implement an MMS client on PDA, which supports our patented interactive MMS technology, so this client could provide better user interfaces than other MMS clients on the market, especially for mobile interactive services.
  • iMMS (interactive MMS) Application Server. It provides an MMS service runtime system and MMS service management system for service providers and enterprise users.
  • iMMS SDK provides APIs and an authoring tool to support quick MMS development.

In conclusion, the MMS platform could provide powerful functions for a client, an application server, SDK and enterprise solutions, which are based on IBM advanced technology and our patented MMS enhancement.
