Autonomic Computing

Agenda 2001

Explanatory Notes
What is an "autonomic computing system?"

First, let's define a system: a collection of computing resources tied together to perform a specific set of functions. It could be a chip, a server, a storage system.

But for autonomic computing, we are referring mainly to larger-scale computing systems:
collections of servers and storage over a network, including operating systems, middleware -- even some the application functions.

For autonomic computing to really "work" its scope needs to affect all those layers. That's why this is such a challenge. So what would such a system look like? Here are some defining characteristics.
