Autonomic Computing
BUSINESS FOCUS

BUSINESS FOCUS

The proliferation of computer devices and the added complexity of multiple operating systems, networks and applications have resulted in a demand for I/T services that far exceeds the supply.

IBM refers to these circumstances as a "threshold moment," a time when the demonstrated need is so urgent as to require a whole new way of conceiving the definition of the problem and the solution. IBM's proposed solution, autonomic computingGlossary Lookup, seeks to alleviate these forces by using examples of automation in nature and in past threshold moments as the foundation for a new model of computing.

To enable autonomic computing, businesses and the I/T industry face an extraordinary challenge. Although IBM has identified the threshold and proposed a solution, implementing autonomic computing will require the participation of thinkers and businesses throughout the industry. The radical nature of the autonomic computing solution has implications for the way we conceive, design, manage and maintain technology at myriad and layered levels, placing it far beyond the domain of any one company.

Within this section of the site, IBM invites you to dig deeper into the unique challenges facing businesses in making autonomic computing a reality. We offer a look at the problem from the perspective of business operations and economics through a series of interviews and essays. Lastly we offer a look behind the scenes at the projects in development at IBM that provide a solid foundation for the development of autonomic computing.
