Our Lab
IBM Research and Development – Australia was established in October 2010. It is located in the University of Melbourne precinct, on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The lab began operation in the first half of 2011 and will grow to 150 technical and research staff in five years. The lab also encompasses the IBM Research Collaboratory in Life Sciences - Melbourne, which is part of the Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative (VLSCI).
Our People
"IBM researchers are united in a passion to make the world work better, dedicated to creating an impact for clients and IBM, collaborating to change the way the world works, and discovering the answers to our greatest challenges". Dr. John E. Kelly III, IBM Senior Vice President and Director of IBM Research
Our Projects
IBM Research and Development - Australia is focussed on two major areas: Smarter Planet and Life Sciences. Within these areas, research projects in natural resources, disaster management and computational biology are being explored in collaboration with businesses, universities, and government agencies.
Our Collaborations
The partnership between IBM and the University of Melbourne was launched officially on the 11th of February 2010 with the announcement of the Life Sciences Collaboratory. Half a year later, on the 14th of October, 2010, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard welcomed the news of IBM’s first global research and development laboratory at the University of Melbourne. In a world first for IBM, the new global lab will combine research and development in a single organisation focused on accelerating progress toward a smarter planet.
