Things Which Rain From The Sky But Are Not Wet

A Tutorial on Cosmic Radiation and its effects on the Semiconductor Industry

   Radiation Effects

Each day a collection of particles from our Sun, our Galaxy, and our Universe shower the Earth. The Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis display beautiful facades which disguise potentially catastrophic damage to power grids and electronics systems. In this talk, I present a tutorial on cosmic radiation in the world around us. Radiation sourced from gamma ray bursts, our Sun, and even within our semiconductor packaging materials, spurs new areas of research in fault tolerant computer chip circuits and computer system design.
