Work with Customers
  Overview

As a leader in the information technology industry, IBM and its Research division realize the importance of delivering innovation and competitive advantage to the customer. On average, IBM researchers spend about 25% of their time with customers compared to 3-4% as little as eight years ago. Scientists in our newly announced On Demand Innovation Services group will spend as much as 50% of their time working with customers to conceive the next generation of on demand services. However, getting research to the market quickly has not come at the expense of our long-term outlook. In fact, our interaction with customers gives a new source of problems and challenges that for our long term exploratory work to attack.

Initiatives such as our On Demand Innovative Services, "First-of-a-Kind" program and the Industry Solutions Labs serve as a direct line from research to the market. Our leading edge technology empowers customers to achieve specific goals.

  On Demand Innovation Services

With Research, IBM has made a science of transforming the market place. From contributions fundamental to IBM's leadership in software solutions to the creation of hardware technologies that have created multibillion-dollar industries, IBM's Research division has had a profound effect on the I/T industry. With On Demand Innovation Services, its first ever customer-facing group, IBM Research has set out to change fundamentally the way IBM works in the services industry. On demand Innovation Services will lead our customers to an on-demand model for their business by analyzing their I/T challenges and developing novel methods to transform their business processes. Researcher Consultants will work with IBM Global Services' traditional consultants to explore cutting edge Research projects that will increase customers' flexibility and provide them with unique market advantages in line with IBM's on demand strategy.

  First-of-a-Kind (FOAK)

First-of-a-Kind projects involve partnerships between IBM and customers to develop promising research projects into market-ready products. The program gives select customers the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a virtual research team to solve the hard problems for which ready solutions do not exist. Researchers get the benefit of immediate customer feedback to further enhance their project. This has served as a great way to match researchers with target companies for joint programs to explore new and innovative technologies for emerging opportunities. Two examples of such projects are Oceano and Java Based Service Creation.

  Industry Solutions Labs (I S L)

The Industry Solutions Labs (ISLs) are a collaborative partnership between IBM Research and you, the customer, to discover how leading-edge technologies and innovative solutions can help to solve your business problems. A visit to one of our ISLs gives you an opportunity to see demonstrations of IBM Research's projects. Each visit is tailored to meet your specific needs, and the agenda can be focused on an immediate sales objective or targeted more broadly by covering an array of emerging technologies. Our ISLs in Hawthorne, NY, and in Zurich, Switzerland are located within IBM Research labs, allowing you to gain valuable insights into technologies and solutions still in development in addition to offering briefings about existing solutions, products, systems and services. The ISL customer engagement is generally one day in duration and consists of presentations by IBM scientists and industry experts, collaborative dialogs on specific business issues, and demonstrations of key strategic technologies.
