A Look Inside Research

Innovation is becoming ever more important in the world. Breakthroughs in core technologies and methods, leading to novel products and services, are urgently required. It is essential to develop technologies quickly, with foresight and a broad perspective.
The Tokyo Research Laboratory (TRL), which opened its doors in 1982, is helping to lead this effort. When it opened, TRL was IBM’s first research laboratory in Asia. These days, some 200 researchers play important roles in meeting the challenge of contributing to society and IBM’s success.
Researchers at TRL are active in five research areas: systems and technology, distributed computing, information and interaction, programming models and tools, and solutions to business problems. Specific areas of interest include autonomic computing, Grid computing, digital media technology, virtual identity management and optimization technology. Since its inception, TRL has developed numerous core technologies for IBM products and solutions. The lab also actively collaborates with other IBM Research labs, government research institutes, universities, scientific societies and IBM clients.
IBM believes that the right research environment is essential, not just for research projects to run smoothly, but also to nurture invention and innovation. TRL has such an environment, with well equipped laboratories, workshops and a library. Researchers and developers often visit TRL, not only from other IBM labs, but also from institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Princeton University. These visitors collaborate with TRL researchers on both short- and long-term projects. Also, TRL provides inspiring surroundings and fosters a global point of view through its intern program and frequent seminars. In this well provisioned and comfortable environment, researchers and visitors from all over the world can concentrate on their work.
TRL will continue to strengthen its partnerships with Japanese industry and with the scientific institutions that lead the world in many fields, in order to originate innovative technologies and meet the challenge of solving clients’ problems. More importantly, each TRL scientist is working to fulfill the laboratory's responsibility, as a front runner in information technology, to help build the innovations that will take us into the future.
