A Look Inside Research

Inventing better technologies to support collaborative work
Part of IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, the Cambridge site is home to over 40 leading research scientists, designers and developers. This lab overlooks the banks of the Charles River and is close to both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The primary work in this lab is done by the following two groups:
Collaborative User Experience (CUE) Research
This group merges expertise in human work practices with technological innovation, creating new applications and product enhancements that anticipate and support the collaborative process. CUE is currently focused on several themes: activity management, large-scale collaborations and information visualizations, and collaborative development environments. CUE is also involved with On Demand Innovation Services and will be actively developing consulting assets -- both software and methodologies -- that support collaboration in client engagements. The team uses a variety of techniques in its research, including research studies, surveys, ethnographic explorations, strategic design, prototype development and pilot development.
XML + Standards and Technology
This team focuses on the development of standards and implementations for XML and Web services-related technologies. The XML+ team has earned worldwide respect for its contributions to Internet standards such as XML and XSL, and for its role in development of Java programming technologies. The group has also contributed to the SOAP proposal and has been very active in the Apache open source development community.
