Christine Halverson

Christine A. Halverson is a Research Staff Member in Social Computing at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center . In the last 3 years she has been doing more work around collaborative system support for programmers. Currently she is working on the PERCS project to understand the world of high performance computing - programmers, users and support staff. She continues to be interested in how social and community processes for individuals, groups and organizations are supported as more and more interaction happens online. This focus includes analyzing individual online behavior, (including, but not limited to, computer-mediated communications (CMC)) and extends to understanding how on- and off-line behavior combine when groups are supported over distance.

In general Christine is interested in understanding collaborative work, with and without technology support. This includes looking more deeply at conceptual issues such as organizational memory, for which she was awarded an NSF grant with University of Michigan Professor Mark Ackerman for a two-year field study. In the past she has done a variety of work in human-computer interaction including social aspects of interfaces with and without characters, speech supported interfaces, and multi-modal interfaces. Work in analyzing speech user interfaces with colleagues at Watson won them the Brian Shakel Award for Best paper at Interact 99.

Christine holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from the University of California , San Diego for work done in Distributed Cognition. She is author of papers in the fields of HCI and CSCW and is an associate editor of the Journal of Computer Supported Cooperative Work. She has served on conference committees for CSCW, CHI, GROUP and DIS. , With Elizabeth Churchill, Christine has recently co-edited a special issue of IEEE Internet Computing on Social Networks. She is also collaborating on an edited book: "Resources, Co-Evolution, and Artifacts: Theory in CSCW".
