Catalina Danis

Catalina is a Research Staff Member in the Social Computing Group at IBM's TJ Watson Research Center. The unifying theme that runs through her work since she joined IBM in 1987 is a focus on understanding work practices broadly defined and designing software to support them. She has worked in the areas of Automatic Speech Recognition, Internet Applications and, since 2000, with Social and Collaborative Technologies. Her interests in collaboration span small work groups, enterprise organizations, loosely organized internet-based groups and adversarial collaboration. Her current work is on understanding the work of scientists, software developers and computing support personnel working in the area of High Performance Computing. In this project, she is particularly interested in knowledge sharing through collaborative activities. Catalina holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Chicago, where her focus was on language acquisition and the operation of memory in language processing. During her graduate student period, she began a career-long interest in the use of varied methodologies to study human behavior and interaction. Over the years, she has explored the use of various survey, experimental and observational methods. She has published broadly in the areas of survey methodology, language acquisition , memory function, automatic speech recognition, design, internet applications, and collaboration. She has also co-taught tutorials on collaboration technologies (with Andreas Girgensohn and Alison Lee), a workshop on the use of patterns in design (with John Thomas, Sharon Greene, and Till Schummer) and a course on Media Spaces and Online Environments in the Computer Science Department at Columbia University (with Alison Lee).
